Image 1® FULL HD: For the best viewing experience

Full HD

Look in any major newspaper and you will see ads from department stores and electronics outlets promoting television sets that feature 1080p with a wider 16:9 aspect ratio..

Research analysts are predicting a complete conversion of the current standard 4:3 view to 16:9 for TV sets and laptops by 2008 [US TODAY, 9/10/2006].

HDTV offers consumers more natural 16:9 aspect ratio that reflects the anatomy of human vision. And many now promote sets that feature screens offering the 1080p HD standard, promising the highest resolution image available.

KARL STORZ HD is changing the nature of many forms of endoscopic surgery. Image 1® FULL HD gives surgeons the best viewing experience by offering higher resolution and clarity, as well as wider and more natural views of the operative field.

To understand how HD technology is being applied to surgery, it is important to clarify what technical properties define HD. So, what do the numbers and terms associated with HD mean? See the sidebar to the right for details.

HD Technology: What the numbers mean

  • HD resolution is expressed as 720 or 1080, representing the vertical lines on the image—the more lines, the higher the spatial resolution
  • HD scanning format is described as being either interlaced or progressive
  • Temporal resolution (expressed as frames per second) can be either 30 or 60 fps
  • The aspect ratio (horizontal to vertical resolution) of a consumer HDTV monitor is 16:9, compared with a standard definition TV, for example, which is 4:3
